The Competitive Landscape

Sweet Republic is a part of the sweet treat industry. The company is recognized for its unique flavors of ice cream that are made from scratch. The category that Sweet Republic is a part of is Ice cream so their main competition includes small local ice cream companies, as well as mainstream ice cream companies. They also face competition from other companies that are a part of the dessert industry. One of the main competitors of Sweet Republic includes Celtic Creamery which offers handmade ice cream with an Irish fusion. Another main competitor is Little Truckee Ice cream which is a company that also offers natural ice cream that’s handmade in their shop near Donner Lake. Further competition that Sweet Republic faces includes ice cream companies like Cold Stone which are more mainstream and well-known by the public. These are the easier options for consumers to choose due to the accessibility of the company as well as the awareness they’ve created amongst society. However, consumers who choose Sweet Republic receive a more authentic and homemade experience. This is a desire from consumers that larger companies who are a part of this industry lack in. Other competition that Sweet Republic faces includes companies a part of the sweet treat industry that can be preferred over ice cream. For example, there are other companies that highlight specific dessert foods such as Crumble Cookies and Insomnia Cookies. This can be a threat to Sweet Republic because consumers of the sweet treat industry may choose other dessert options that they are more aware of.

CONSUMER INSIGHTS

A significant portion of Sweet Republic’s audience and customers is college students. The location near campus and student living makes it a popular spot for ASU students. College students typically have a low spending budget so it is very important that Sweet Republic gives students a reason to buy Sweet Republic’s product even though it is more expensive than brands at grocery stores or gas stations. One reason people go to Sweet Republic is for the experience. Part of the appeal of an ice cream shop is you can go with friends or on a date and make an activity out of it. Sweet Republic enhances the experience by providing outdoor seating and by having their Tempe location by the lake. When people go to Sweet Republic it is about more than just the taste of the ice cream. Customers get to enjoy an experience that they wouldn’t get from buying from a grocery store and taking it back home. Another reason why customers choose Sweet Republic is the quality of the ice cream. A common customer at Sweet Republic is families. Parents are more likely than most to have a preference for high-quality ingredients. Sweet Republic makes its ice cream in small batches using premium ingredients sourced from local farmers.

The company's use of high-quality ingredients is a plus for all customers but is especially appealing to parents who are conscious about quality. Another way that Sweet Republic appeals to parents is with unique flavors targeted towards a more adult audience. The three flavors that seem most geared towards older customers are Earl Grey, Espresso, and Chai Tea ice creams. These flavors are less common at grocery stores and other ice cream shops so people who enjoy them will be more likely to come back to Sweet Republic. Sweet Republic’s main appeal to children is the add-ons that are offered. Younger demographics are more likely to want to add toppings and cones to make their treat more exciting. Sweet Republic has a variety of toppings and cone options as well as a sundae menu that allows customers to customize their dessert rather than getting just a plain scoop.

CULTURAL/ENVIRONMENTAL INSIGHTS

A huge environmental trend right now with brands from the eye of a consumer is sustainability. Sweet Republic is tapping into being a sustainable brand by locally sourcing all of its ingredients from nearby farms to create smaller batches of products from scratch. They pride themselves on not using any artificial flavoring, colors, preservatives, or hydrogenated oils only natural ingredients. They put a lot of time and effort into making their products. To make their artisan ice cream they first start with milk and cream from independent Arizona dairy farms, and add in hand-stirred caramel, slow-roasted bananas, handmade marshmallows, freshly baked brownies, and more. For their sorbets, they use ripe whole fruit that they peel, pit, and chop right in the store. This sets them apart from their competition in the sweet treat industry. They go to extreme lengths to make sure their customers are getting the highest quality of ice cream that comes straight from the source. They also make all of their toppings from scratch to make sure they continue to provide the highest quality of products with the best flavor. Being organic and sustainable is a very big component when looking at the success of a brand through the eye of a consumer. Quite a few people are deciding to go vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, or all three nowadays. This is important when looking into the cultural trends of consumers. Sweet Republic has done well in being inclusive by providing a choice for everyone. They have a dairy option, a gluten-free option, and even a vegan option. This is great in making sure each and every customer has something to enjoy. Feeling included and that everyone has a place and belongs has been a huge stressor that impacts consumers.

SOCIAL INSIGHTS

Sweet Republic has been working on the social media part of communicating with customers. People nowadays rely on social media a lot and tend to communicate through social media instead of face-to-face. It is a great way for them to grow their online presence through Instagram and TikTok. On Instagram, Sweet Republic did a great job of keeping people engaged such as including national holidays or seasonal flavors that are on sale or have a discount for promotion. The reviews and comments on social media platforms are typically positive. It is usually feedback from the customers or people who have questions. Facebook is also one of the ways to communicate between customers and Sweet Republic. They have over 6,000 followers on their Facebook page. One post that stood out to me the most was about the flavor of Earl grey tea flavor ice cream. Sweet Republic wants to let customers know how their flavors are made and the reason behind them. Therefore, they put out a short story about the reason why Earl grey tea flavor is made which is to honor the death of Queen Elizabeth II which is also her favorite tea. This is an amazing way for customers to know the purpose of the store since people nowadays spend a lot of time on social media.
